Description

Father John Misty is the nom-de-plume of Josh Tillman, who has been releasing solo albums since 2003 and who recently left Seattle''s Fleet Foxes after playing drums from 2008-2011. Fear Fun consists of such disparate elements as Waylon Jennings, Harry Nilsson, Arthur Russell, and Physical Graffiti, often within the same song. Tillman''s voice has never been better, while the music maintains a dark, mysterious yet playful quality. Fear Fun is Father John Misty''s Sub Pop debut and was produced by Phil Ek (Modest Mouse, Band of Horses, Fleet Foxes).

Fear Fun is Josh Tillman’s first album where he performed under the name Father John Misty and it is a rollicking good time. There are honky-tonk songs, lounge singer-style songs, rock ‘n roll songs; the album runs a gamut of genres. The lyrics are wry, observational, clever and memorable. The musicians are top notch and Jonathan Wilson’s production serves the album well. I’ve had this album on regular rotation for years now and I don’t see that changing.

Treat yourself to a vinyl copy - you won’t regret it.

Father John Misty may have gotten more attention for his later albums, but going back to Fear Fun, it has most of the elements that would make him such a star later on. Newly separated from Fleet Foxes, Tillman''s musings are witty, sarcastic, dry, and strangely relatable, as topics like depression are tackled sardonically. Tracks like "Nancy from Now On" and "I''m Writing a Novel" have become permanent staples of his live set too.

Josh Tillman. Interesting.
Guess I missed since I''m kind of a geezer.
Turned on to this album by my younger son.
Has elements of Dylan with The Band, Beatles, American roots, etc.
Somehow they all fit together.
Smart lyrics: Sometimes clever and absurd; sometimes heartfelt. Always draw you into the world the song is painting.
I play this thing over and over, like a kid.
Haven''t tired of it.
Just keep liking it more.
Get it.

Great debut album. Lots of catchy tunes and imaginative lyrics. Got this in preparation for their second album I love You, Honeybear. The record comes as a gatefold sleeve despite only being one LP. Inside is an pop art type American flag artwork. There''s an MP3 download code off Sub Pop in which you can choose the quality (MP3, ALAC, FLAC). Comes with 2 fold out papers that have some sort of short stories/comedy sketch readings. I haven''t gotten around to reading them, there''s alot of text!

So, who knew one of the prominent voices on the Fleet Foxes records was the drummer? You? Hey Congrats, hipster. Your musical knowledge dwarfs mine own. Yet, I digress. This is a fun record. There''s all kinds of kooky lyrics and if you happen to love L.A., it''s all over this album. It''s L.A. as it was if you moved to LA from another city in the last year and were suddenly awash in people who didn''t work, yet somehow afforded sushi for lunch. Oh, and all the lovely ladies one could ask for. Can you blame Father Tillman? He got a fair amount of fame and decided to cash it in where he could get more skirts for the dollar. On the upside, we get a darn fine solo record. On the downside, those two Fleet Foxes albums might be my favorite albums of the last decade. So, my enjoyment of this record is awash in biterness, like so many Hollywood analogies.

I have collected music for forty four years and worship a broad church in that regard but this is SOMETHING SPECIAL. This is the Harvest of the modern era, only better, sorry Neil Young fans. The vinyl version is superbly produced and all you have to do is sit back and take it all in. However, doing that will take some time though as this is a dense yet accessible piece of work. THIS IS AN ALBUM THAT WILL DEFINE THIS ERA OF MUSIC AND WILL LIVE ON AS A CLASSIC IN THE FUTURE. Make no bones about it it this is the real deal.

A terrific album! Blessed with a fine voice, pitch perfect, mellow rhythms and melody and imaginative lyrics, Josh Tillman has created a magical west coast masterpiece, reminiscent of the best of 60s/70s American country rock and the Beatles, White album territory. His talent is evident in all of his previous understated releases, but here he steps forward into the light. Though Tillman has likely benefitted from his association with the Fleet Foxes (being the drummer), he is stands on his own with confidence. Whereas previous releases have been, in the main, understated, quiet, simple songs of fragile beauty, `Fear Fun'' goes multicolour. Arrangements and production are lavish, giving the songs a sweet, warm, summer feel and there is a more variety across the album. The songs are strong and varied throughout: the punchy, Beatlesy `Well, you can do it without me''; countrified `Tee Pees 1-12''; angelic, Hammond organ driven `O I long to feel your arms around me'' - it all adds up to a very satisfying listen. Dithered between 4 and 5 stars. However, the guy deserves great credit, and the first reviewer (excellent review!) gave 4, so 5 it is! More please!

There isn''t a track that i dislike or feel is too weak to be on the album but of course I like some better than others, my favourites being Fun times in Babylon, Hollywood forever cemetery sings, Misty''s nightmares and my absolute favourite, Nancy from now on. Josh''s voice is beautiful, yet strong and this is definitely noted when seeing him perform live. He is gifted, has a stunning voice, good looks, great songs and can certainly move those hips when performing. He has the lot. I''ve heard some of his new material for the next album and i can''t wait.
